What is a portal?
A portal is a personal customizable website that brings together information and services specific to the person using the portal.

What is the name and URL of the Rice University Portal?
The name is myRice and the address is my.rice.edu.

Does myRice replace the Rice University Web site?
No. The Rice University Web site will continue to be the public domain for information, internal and external. myRice is a private domain that will allow you to access and manage all of your University information that requires sign-on and authorization.

How can I recommend a feature for myRice?
You can fill out the form in myRice news window.

Will I be logged out if I open a new portal window?
It depends on your browser type(Firefox or Internet Explorer).

Is it secure to have the single login to all my personal information?
Yes. Make sure your logout or close your browser if you are sharing a machince or using lab computer.

How do I log in?
You have to log in using your NetID and password. If you don't know your NetID go to apply.rice.edu.

What is a tab?
A tab is a section in the portal that can incorporate one or more channels in one or more columns. Tabs are customizable: you can rename, move and add channels to them.

How do I add a tab?
In My settings you can see a button to the right of the tab names "Add new tab". Click on this button to add a new tab. You will have the option to add a name and to choose it as the channel you see after you log in.

How do I remove a tab?
In My Settings select the tab you want to delete. Click the "Delete" button at the top of the page to delete the tab. This step cannot be undone.

How do I change the name of a tab?
In My Settings select the tab you want to modify the name of. At the top of the page you will see the box with the editable name. Change the name and click "Rename".

How can I choose which tab to see after login?
In My settings select the tab you would like to see after login. Click "Make this the default "Active Tab" (the tab that is selected when you log into the portal)".

What is a channel?
A channel is a customizable unique feature within a portal where specific information or application appears. For example, a website can be displayed as a channel.

How do I add a channel?
Go to My settings. Select the tab you want to add the channel to and click "Add channel". Select the category, then the subcategory if there are any, and then the channel you want to add. Then click "Add channel".

How do I remove a channel?
You can remove a channel from either the Portal view or from My Settings by clicking on the x icon at the top right corner of the channel.

How do I change the location of a channel?
In My Settings click on the tab that has the channel you would like to modify. The channel box has arrows on it and click on the arrow that shows the direction you want to move the channel. For example, if you want to move the channel to the right, click the right arrow.

How do I add a website to the portal?
There are two ways: you can add a website as a single channel to a new tab or you can add a site as a channel to a tab that has other channels. In the channel options you have to select "Website as a category" and then enter the URL. To read about how to add a tab and channel go to the corresponding help topics.

What is RSS?
RSS is created by websites that want to allow other sites to publish some of their contents. The content can be news, events listing, news stories, headlines, etc. To get the RSS feed from your favorite website, go to the website and find out whether it has RSS feeds. For example, NPR had a link on its website to all available RSS feeds. RSS feeds look like URLs (webpage addresses).

How do I add an RSS feed?
See "How do I add a website to the portal".

How do I change the skin (color) of the portal?
In My Settings click the link "Choose skin". You will get a list of skins that you can choose from. Choose the skin you would like and click "Apply".

How do I change the width of a column on a tab?
In My Settings click on the tab name on which the column is located. Click "Select column" and enter the new values for the column width. Make sure the sum of the widths is 100%.

How do I add a column?
In My Settings click on the tab you want to add the column to. Click on "Add column" in the location where you want to add a column. A column will be added to the tab.
